Living With Alopecia Hair Loss
Alopecia hair loss is something that affects mostly men in their older years. However it can happen to either gender at any time for myriad reasons. Alopecia is the umbrella term for any kind of unwanted hair loss. It does not apply to people who are bald by choice or by their own doing. It can be horribly embarrassing to many people and most try different tactics to keep their hair.
Male pattern baldness is probably the most common form of alopecia. It is something that men have as part of their genetic code. When they get older (some even as young as their teen years) can start losing their hair or find their hair thinning. It cannot grow back–or needs medical assistance to do so.
Medication can also sometimes cause baldness. Stress is another factor which can contribute. If you talk to your doctor he or she can point you in the right direction of the cause and, thereby, the cure.
Most men accept it as an inevitability. Other try desperately to hide it. A common way of hiding it is the comb over hairdo where men let a few strands grow long and they they brush it over their bald head to fool people into believing they have a full head of hair. It fools no one and can be just as embarrassing as the baldness itself.
Toupees are a safer, wiser route. If you buy a good toupee–one that is made of real hair–you can actually look as though it is your own. It needs to match your own remaining hair perfectly and you need to know how to properly apply it so it does not fall off. Another new development is follicle implant surgery where hair follicles are taken from another area of the body or from a donor and put on a man’s head where they can grow. It can be expensive.
Another common solution is a hair stimulating cream. There are endless hair growth products out there to jump start your follicles. Some work, most do not. If you speak to your doctor, he or she can have some good advice on this subject.
